  • Mommy Says

  • Ask Fatou: Learning About a New Culture

I just found out that my new classmate, Yaitza, has a strong accent when she speaks English. Everyone at school laughs at her. How should I act when I hear others joking her?

  • Imani and Friends

“Hey Imani,” Roger said. “What’s up with your long face?” It was a cold Monday morning and I didn’t want to be bothered. I could hear the guys behind me laughing. Ma promised me a relaxer when I turned 10 years old, but when my birthday came around I was fresh out of luck.

  • Siya and Jamal

Siya was not an ordinary kid. For one thing, his name was Siya and in Chicago that wasn’t a name most people have heard of.

  • Patwa Town

It was Sunday morning and Ma wanted us to pick a dried coconut for dinner. Sunday dinners are the best. We usually have coconut rice and peas, turtle, salad, ripe plantains, and avocado.

Dear Fatou, People make fun of me because I have thick hair. I want to get my hair straightened with a perm, but my mother says it’s not good for me. Sometimes I get so scared to go to school because I can hear other kids laughing.

Is Africa a Country?

Is Africa a Country?

by Aset Brathwaite

Fri, Oct 28, 2011

Africa is not a country, it’s a huge continent. There are 53 countries in Africa. It’s much larger than what many think. The United States can fit comfortably within the Sahara alone. It is three times the size of the US with 600,000,000 million people. Nigeria has 115 million black people, the largest black population in the world. There are about four hundred different ethnic groups in Africa.
